Amphi Panteras, Stories that Soar!

Episode 1031

This week on Arizona Illustrated… we continue our investigation into the housing crisis by following the Amphi Panteras, who are organizing tenants in Tucson’s Ward 3 to fight for better living conditions; Literacy Connects’ Stories that Soar! program inspires creativity and promotes active literacy in schools and appreciate the desert at night by taking a hike.

Amphi Panteras
Part one of this story aired in 2022 and left off with the Tucson Tenants Union stepping in to advocate for the tenants at the Monterey Garden Apartments, where the leases of all 52 units had been terminated. The story looked at the lack of affordable housing within Tucson and how questionable landlord practices contribute to the growing housing crisis. Part 2 broadens that microcosm to Tucson’s Amphi neighborhood where tenant activist group the ‘Amphi Panteras’ are focusing their attention on the Malibu Apartments where tenants are fighting for their tenants’ rights.

Stories that Soar!
Stories that Soar! programs (STS!) empowers K-12 students by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas through a variety of literacy and arts programs. Literacy Connects’ Stories that Soar! taps into the wellspring of children’s imaginations. This program transforms and shares students’ words and ideas through the arts to inspire creativity, promote active literacy, and build engaged communities. This is done through students submitting their own stories to their school’s “Magic Box” from which a team of professional actors and musicians select a number of them to turn into performances held at the school’s assembly.

Field Notes: Night Hikes
In the latest installment of the Field Notes series, we head out at dusk and walk under the stars. Arizona Illustrated producer David Fenster shares his love of hiking at night and explores how our perceptions are changed when the sun goes down.
